Carpet Cleaning Hacks At Home

Top Carpet Cleaning DIY Home Hacks

As much as we’d all like our carpets to be in tip top condition 24/7, life can happen, bringing with it little spills and stains along the way. That’s why we’ve put together a list of top carpet cleaning hacks that will come in handy if you don’t have a carpet cleaner immediately to hand.

Don’t rub stains

When you rub a stain, it causes particles to separate and become ground into carpet fibres, which will then lead to premature breakdown of those fibres. This is obviously bad news for your carpet. However, if you blot your stains rather than rub them, you will be able to put a small amount of pressure on the stain which will help to soak it up. The best way to blot a stain is to work from the outside of the stain inward. If you blot the stain the other way, you could cause the stain to spread further.

Freeze trodden in gum

We’ve all been in the situation where we’ve unknowingly trodden in chewing gum and walked it into our home. Annoying for us, and bad news for our carpets! So how can you get rid of any gum without ruining your carpet? Ice cubes. Freeze the gum with ice cubes for about 30 seconds, and once the gum is frozen solid use a spoon to lift the gum upwards, whilst carefully trimming it away from the carpet (cutting as close to the gum as possible.)

Candle wax

Whether it’s from an over-exaggerated blowing out of the candles on a birthday cake, to everyday candles burning away, it can be quite easy for wax to find its way into your carpet and stay there. However, with this handy hack, any melted in wax will be gone in no time. First you’ll need to grab your iron and a white cloth. Place your white cloth over the melted wax and put your iron on top. This will warm up the wax, making it easy for you scrape the wax up with a butter knife.
Combat crushed sweets and candy
Whilst we enjoy our sugary treats from time to time, our carpets aren’t too keen. The best way to remove trodden in sweets and food is to try and scrape it out with a brush or butter knife, and then use and sponge and water to get the sugar out of the carpet. If you don’t remove all of the sugar then your carpet will attract dirt and debris more easily.

Pet Hair

We love our pets, but their hair can cause our carpets problems. Simply vacuuming is not enough, but that’s ok. All you need to do is don a pair of rubber gloves and rub the carpet until your bring the hair up in clumps. If you don’t have any rubber gloves you could use something like a squeegee.

Carpet Cleaning Company Somerset

We love a challenge. Clean the carpet or replace the carpet. We like to see the benefits of cleaning a carpet and take pride in doing our best every time. £55 minimum charge.

It’s the carpet type chosen by the home owner that is the deciding factor. Light and bright shows all the dirt polypropylene or nylon construction helps the dirt to be removed much easier than with a wool mix.

Polypropylene is a synthetic construction and doesn’t absorb dirt in to its colours but wool is a natural product and will absorb any spills and dirt making it much more likely that residual staining will remain. Call / Text 07815 814128 for free honest advice.

All end of tenancy carpet cleans are completed with the same time effort and pride as any other carpet clean carried out and the results speak volumes.

Somerset Hoarder Clean Up

Hoarder Cleaning Services Somerset

We have had over 7 years experience with handling the sensitive nature of hoarder property cleanups and restoration. Some mental issues include the feeling of not being able to release, and don’t like to throw things away. Often this is coupled with a restricted access in their garden to the bins or to hire a skip. Crawfordsprc respect each and every job requirement and provide high levels of dignity whilst cleaning a property.

Other reasons include situations whereby a lady was no longer mobile and was unable to pick up dropped items onto the floor around her property. Whilst it could be considered awful, working with less able people who drop coffee, soup or other food items it’s impossible to clean without help.

Steps to cleaning this project and recycling of waste

  • Somerset based rented property
  • This took 5 people 2 working days
  • Two van loads of waste materials to be recycled with the local waste company Towens

We are called in by different agencies which could include the reasons because a client has had a fall and the Emergency Services have highlighted the situation. Also it could be because a person is in hospital and it’s not safe to release and return home without a clean toi ensure safety and optimum healthy limits.

Cleaning product sales set to continue to rise in 2019

Instagram Promotes Home Cleaning

A new craze has taken over the internet and it even involves filming your toilet.

Cleaning has become one of the biggest social media trends of 2018, where platforms such as Instagram are now awash with hashtags like #cleaningobsessed.

If you are looking for cleaning services then look no further than CrawfordsPRC. Looking for an outstanding carpet cleaning serviceCall / Text now Mobile: 07815 814128 / local number 01934 513862 or send a message via our Contact Form. We also offer a sensitive and dignified hoarder house cleaning service for landlords and domestic.

Influencers like Mrs Hinch, who to date has 1.4 million Instagram followers, have somehow managed to glamorise typically mundane tasks.

And as they continue to post cleaning demonstrations using their favourite cleaning products and tools, retailers have noticed a dramatic increase in cleaning product sales across the UK.

Sophie Hinchliffe – known as “Mrs Hinch” – has been “overwhelmed” by the success of her quirky “stories”.

Since she joined the site in March, thousands of people have become members of the “Hinch Army”, even helping get the account back online after it was hacked.

The 28-year-old, from Maldon, Essex, has now upped her online security.

Mrs Hinchliffe said her “stomach was in a knot” when she couldn’t get in to her @MrsHinchHome_X_ Instagram profile on Wednesday, but her fans pulled together to sort it out “within hours”.

She added: “I had so many shares and tweets about it – the Army just pulled together.

“I had messages saying that if I had to close my account, they would follow me wherever I went. It made my heart melt.”

Mrs Hinchliffe, who cleans for at least 30 minutes a day, has dubbed her cleaning cupboard “Narnia” and names her favourite cleaning products.

ned a new term for cleaning – “Hinching”.

The hairdresser said: “This all came out of me having fun with cleaning.

“It sounds cheesy but it’s something everyone has to do so you might as well enjoy it.

Image copyright Sophie Hinchliffe
Image caption Pictures of Mrs Hinchliffe’s stylish home also have proved to be an Instagram hit – mainly, she believes, because everything in it can be bought from high street stores.

“Cleaning helps me relax and I’ve had so many amazing messages from people saying I’ve changed their life or helped them with their mental health.

“It’s physically impossible for me to reply to everyone but the messages means so much.

“Without the Hinch Army, I wouldn’t be where I am. They’re part of my journey.”

Lorna McDonald, store manager of B&M on Bangor’s Main Street, told BBC News NI: “We’ve noticed there are a lot of younger people coming in and buying cleaning products, but there has been a rise in general in recent months.

“If you’ve got a following like Mrs Hinch on Instagram, we have to be prepared and have the products that are recommended if we want to increase our sales, especially as the high street is a bit dead at the moment.”

Minky, an online company that produces cleaning equipment noticed a sharp rise in sales after Mrs Hinch endorsed one of their products in unpaid Instagram posts.

They told BBC News NI: “We’ve seen a 10,000% increase in demand from consumers since the end of June this year and an exponential increase in demand from retailers, with no signs of slowing.

“In fact, demand has been so high that stock is selling out as quickly as it goes on sale.”

Easho, a wholesale website for household products who are in paid partnership with Mrs Hinch, says that the cleaning craze has helped their sales.

“We are now seeing the equivalent of ‘The Delia Effect’ on cleaning products, with growth of up to 200% on some of the most recommended items,” said a spokesperson.

As well as internet retailers, high street shops have also noticed a higher footfall of customers with cleaning products in their baskets.

‘Tidy home, tidy mind’

Katie Colwell, from Donaghadee in County Down, says cleaning has become “one of my friend group’s most common topics of conversation”.

And it’s all because of social media.

Katie Colwell

The 27-year-old nurse told BBC News NI: “Embarrassingly, I spend hours watching social media influencers cleaning.

“Among my friends, we talk about which products we have all tried and whether we rate them or not and what tips we have picked up from different social media influencers.

“I am guilty of running to the nearest pound shop to grab the products which I have seen on Instagram to try myself, which has meant I now have enough disinfectant to mop eight football pitches and have them smelling of fresh linen or cranberry and orange.”

But Miss Colwell says her fiancée isn’t convinced by the new hobby.

“He thinks I’m bonkers when I come home, excited to try out my newest cloth or cleaning product, and spend hours cleaning on my days off, but I find it therapeutic and a good way to de-stress,” she said.

“A tidy home is a tidy mind.”

Richard Hopping, an analyst for market research agency Mintel, told BBC News NI: “Our data shows that 39% of cleaners feel stressed when their homes aren’t clean, so promoting the benefits to mental wellbeing through cleaning could be a real factor in why influencers and cleaning are proving so popular.”

Detergent spraying on window

@thesecretcleaner is an anonymous Instagram account who posts regular cleaning tips and has nearly 10,000 followers.

They believe that for many people the online cleaning world provides a “virtual community” for people who may feel isolated.

“When I started the account, I wasn’t working and I found that cleaning kept me sane, kept me going.

“For me, cleaning is a type of mindfulness. You’re focussing on one thing, you’re in the moment and you feel like you have achieved something.

“You have people who support you and don’t think you’re weird for posting videos of you cleaning! It’s a hobby!”

‘Instagrammable’

But like many things on social media, trends tend to come and go, and some predict the cleaning phenomenon may not stand the test of time.

Niamh Taylor, director of Northern Ireland digital marketing agency Digital 24, said: “Some people have a problem with the amount of chemicals and plastic used to keep people’s home squeaky clean.

“Others just do not get why you’d want to watch someone polishing their sink and putting clothes away every night.”

She added: “I don’t think this phenomenon will be as popular throughout 2019 as realistically, Insta-trends are short lived and cleaning is just not ‘Instagrammable’.”

10 Carpet Cleaning Tips For The Home

All images retain copyright as credited below. Taken from an American carpet cleaning company website we thought these tips from Mark Tarbox were too good not to share!

10 Carpet Cleaning Tips For The Home

Despite your best efforts at cleanliness, your carpet will eventually become the victim of drops, spills, accidents, and whatever’s on the bottom of your shoes.

Learn the secrets to keep carpets looking new.

1 Blot Stains, Don’t Rub Them

Dab stains with a cleaning solution and a clean cloth, paper towels, or a sponge. “The key is blotting. Blotting puts a small amount of pressure on the stain to soak it up,” Tarbox says. “Rubbing causes the particles to get ground into the carpet fibers, and this can lead to the premature breakdown of those fibers.” Always blot from the outside of the stain inward, as blotting outward can spread the stain.

2 The Club Soda Process

You may have heard that club soda is effective against beer and wine stains. It’s true—if you use it correctly.

Blot the area with the soda on a cloth. If that doesn’t work, mix one part white vinegar with one part water and pour it into a handheld sprayer. Spray the solution on the entire stained area and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes to soak in. Then press a clean sponge onto the area to soak up the solution and the stain. Tarbox says you may have to repeat this process to eradicate the stain.

Once the stain is gone, rinse the spot with warm water. Use your hand to brush the carpet strands into their natural direction. Finally, lay white paper towels over the area and weigh them down with something heavy, like a phone book. The towels will absorb the dampness from the carpet. Leave the towels in place until the carpet is dry, usually about one day.

3 Try Shaving Cream

Tarbox says the best carpet cleaner for general stains is ordinary shaving cream—”It will remove just about every type of stain.” Apply the shaving cream directly to the stain and let it set for about 30 minutes, Tarbox says. Once the shaving cream has set, blot it away with a dry white cloth. Finish by spraying the area with one part vinegar mixed with one part water and then wiping away the solution with a cloth.

4 Freeze-Dried Gum

You step in chewing gum out on the street but don’t realize it until you tracked that gross, sticky mess onto your carpet. To get it out, head to the freezer and grab a couple of ice cubes. “Freeze the gum with ice cubes for about 30 seconds.” Tarbox said. Once the gum is frozen solid, use a spoon to lift up the glob and cut the strands of carpet as close to the gum as possible. If you cut only a small amount of carpet, the spot shouldn’t be noticeable.

5 Dishwasher Detergent vs Grease

The best method against difficult-to-clean grease stains is to use a drop or two of a grease-cutting dishwashing detergent, such as Joy, in a cup of water. It’ll cut through the grease in the carpet just the way it does on your dishes. “Put the solution in a spray bottle and spray it on the stain,” Tarbox says. “Then blot it up.” Again, you may need to do this multiple times for larger stains.

6 Heat Wax

Burning candles in the house can result in wax dripping onto the carpet, where it quickly dries and gets embedded. Tarbox recommends heating it back up to remove it. Place a white cloth over your iron, then put the iron on top of the wax to warm it up. Finally, scrape off the wax with a butter knife.

“When you are done doing that, lay a paper towel over the surface area and iron on the paper,” Tarbox said. “The wax is melting and binds to the paper, and the wax will be gone after a few more applications.”

Important note: Don’t use the iron this way for more than 30 seconds or you risk burning the carpet. And be sure to use a white cloth and white towels since colored ones can transfer the color onto the carpet when heated up, especially if you have a light-colored carpet.

7 Hydrogen Peroxide to the Rescue

Few carpet stains are as obvious as blood. But suffering a paper cut on your finger and getting a few drops on the carpet doesn’t mean your shag is ruined.

“Hydrogen peroxide will get out blood all day long,” Tarbox says. First, loosen up dried blood with water mixed with a mild detergent. Then scrape off as much blood from the fibers as you can. To get the remainder, apply hydrogen peroxide directly to the stain. The solution will immediately foam when it contacts the blood, so don’t be surprised. Then dab the hydrogen peroxide with towels to dry the carpet.

8 Clean Pet Accidents Organically

Arthur Carlo Franco/Getty Images

Even well-trained pets can have an accident on the carpet. Tarbox prefers organic cleaners, which can costs about $10 for a spray bottle, rather than using chemicals. Spray the cleaner at the strain. “Some scrubbing will be necessary,” Tarbox says. Then wipe up the cleaner with a cloth or towels. Eco-Spot and similar cleaners can also be used to remove other types of stains, including coffee and sauces.

9 Candy Crushed

If you have kids in the house, it’s only a matter of time before candy ends up in the carpet. “Try to scrape it with a spotter brush or a butter knife,” Tarbox says. Then, using a sponge, apply water mixed with a mild soap. “It is important to get all of the sugar out of the area on the carpet,” he points out. “Failure to do so will result in that area attracting dirt and debris easily.” Once the candy is removed, dry the spot by blotting it with a cloth or towels.

10 Deep-Clean Regularly

Deep Steam High Pressure Mobile Carpet Cleaning Services Somerset

Cleaning the carpet is essential to keeping it looking fresh and new. Steam cleaning involves using a cleaning solution under pressure injected deep into the carpet via a water/steam jet attachment.
