Top Carpet Cleaning DIY Home Hacks

As much as we’d all like our carpets to be in tip top condition 24/7, life can happen, bringing with it little spills and stains along the way. That’s why we’ve put together a list of top carpet cleaning hacks that will come in handy if you don’t have a carpet cleaner immediately to hand.

Don’t rub stains

When you rub a stain, it causes particles to separate and become ground into carpet fibres, which will then lead to premature breakdown of those fibres. This is obviously bad news for your carpet. However, if you blot your stains rather than rub them, you will be able to put a small amount of pressure on the stain which will help to soak it up. The best way to blot a stain is to work from the outside of the stain inward. If you blot the stain the other way, you could cause the stain to spread further.

Freeze trodden in gum

We’ve all been in the situation where we’ve unknowingly trodden in chewing gum and walked it into our home. Annoying for us, and bad news for our carpets! So how can you get rid of any gum without ruining your carpet? Ice cubes. Freeze the gum with ice cubes for about 30 seconds, and once the gum is frozen solid use a spoon to lift the gum upwards, whilst carefully trimming it away from the carpet (cutting as close to the gum as possible.)

Candle wax

Whether it’s from an over-exaggerated blowing out of the candles on a birthday cake, to everyday candles burning away, it can be quite easy for wax to find its way into your carpet and stay there. However, with this handy hack, any melted in wax will be gone in no time. First you’ll need to grab your iron and a white cloth. Place your white cloth over the melted wax and put your iron on top. This will warm up the wax, making it easy for you scrape the wax up with a butter knife.
Combat crushed sweets and candy
Whilst we enjoy our sugary treats from time to time, our carpets aren’t too keen. The best way to remove trodden in sweets and food is to try and scrape it out with a brush or butter knife, and then use and sponge and water to get the sugar out of the carpet. If you don’t remove all of the sugar then your carpet will attract dirt and debris more easily.

Pet Hair

We love our pets, but their hair can cause our carpets problems. Simply vacuuming is not enough, but that’s ok. All you need to do is don a pair of rubber gloves and rub the carpet until your bring the hair up in clumps. If you don’t have any rubber gloves you could use something like a squeegee.

Underfloor Heating Kit UK To Toast Your Feet

While we’ve all been stuck at home a lot longer than usual, one of the (unexpected) perks that this has brought us is the fact that we’ve realised just how much DIY we can get done if we put our minds to it.

One of the more surprising trends that we’ve seen over lockdown is the sharp rise in home improvements that we’ve all been getting up to.

According to a study undertaken by the Office for National Statistics, as a nation, the COVID-19 lockdown period has seen us spend significantly more time undertaking DIY projects.

The results of a similar survey by found that over the May Bank Holiday period, a staggering 74% of UK households planned to spend the long weekend tackling a few home DIY projects.

It is clear that the rates of home DIY have experienced a significant boost over the lockdown period, as more people take to those forgotten home improvement jobs. A recent survey of 2,000 adults, that was commissioned by Ronseal, found that these long put-off DIY jobs are finally being tackled during the lockdown period.

The research found that half of these adults had noticed jobs that needed doing that they previously hadn’t taken any notice of. Interestingly, 3 out of 5 of the respondents said that these home improvement jobs normally got forgotten about by the time they’d left the house. As a result, more than half of the adults surveyed had undertaken lockdown DIY projects, with each respondent completing an average of four tasks each.

Furthermore, the positive impact that completing these jobs was having on respondents’ mentality was also evident, as over two-thirds said that it had helped them ease boredom, and additional third of these adults said that the jobs they’d completed would give them something to show for the time they’d spent in lockdown.
